New Relic vs Splunk: Separate the Log Platform, APM, and Security Decisions
Compare New Relic with the relevant Splunk products: Platform for logs, Observability Cloud for APM, and Enterprise Security for security operations.
“New Relic for engineers, Splunk for security” hides the purchasing decision. Splunk Observability Cloud provides infrastructure monitoring, APM, RUM, and synthetics. Logs can remain in Splunk Cloud Platform or Splunk Enterprise and be accessed from the observability workflow. Understanding these boundaries comes before deciding what to replace.
New Relic is not simply an ingestion bill either. A team may depend on application entities, NRQL, browser data, alerts, and access arrangements. Replacing a log destination and replacing that body of operational work are different projects.

Identify the Splunk product being compared
Log storage and search commonly belong to Splunk Platform: Cloud Platform is managed, while Enterprise can be operated by the customer. Observability Cloud is a separate SaaS covering infrastructure, applications, databases, real users, and synthetic monitoring. Enterprise Security adds dedicated security-detection and investigation workflows. A shared brand does not mean buying one includes the entire combination. Splunk products and pricing, Observability Cloud service description
| Work to be done | Relevant comparison |
|---|---|
| Collect, retain, and search application logs | New Relic log management and the chosen Splunk Platform plan |
| Investigate a request behind a service problem | New Relic APM and Splunk Observability Cloud APM |
| Operate security detections and investigations | Enterprise Security, its data inputs, and the security operating requirements |
This defines purchasing scope, not a winner. An organization may already maintain audit data in Splunk Platform while using another application APM. Consolidation should reduce identifiable duplicate work rather than force every team into one query language.
Logs stay put, and so does the query workload
Log Observer Connect makes Platform logs available in Observability Cloud. In the Enterprise connection, logs remain in Enterprise, the connector stores or indexes no copy, and the search head executes the queries. No additional connector charge does not make Platform storage, licensing, or query capacity free. Log Observer Connect
That is useful for teams already keeping logs in Splunk: an APM view need not require copying the entire corpus. Permissions, accessible indexes, network connectivity, and concurrent search resources still need configuration. More entry points can also bring more simultaneous users to the existing backend.
New Relic's logs in context uses entity, trace, and span metadata to correlate logs delivered to its platform. An existing log shipper can remain in place while APM Agent forwarding is disabled and decoration remains enabled, preventing duplicate ingestion. New Relic log correlation
Both can offer a “view logs from this trace” workflow, but the data paths differ. Establish where records live, which system runs a query, and who controls index permissions. A single interface action does not remove the service dependencies behind it.
Query migration is more than syntax
SPL searches, field extractions, lookups, and scheduled reports encode years of operational knowledge in a Splunk deployment. NRQL and New Relic's entity model carry a similar investment. Rewriting syntax only addresses part of a migration: timestamp parsing, missing fields, numeric types, grouping, and aggregation can all alter the result.
For example, a rule counting error logs cannot simply become a span-error chart with the same threshold. One failed request can emit several error messages and contain several failed spans. Explain the business condition that the old rule represented before choosing the new data model.
Splunk Observability Cloud uses OTel as its default collection approach, and New Relic accepts OTLP. The common protocol can preserve some instrumentation. It does not move service definitions, queries, detectors, or permissions automatically. Splunk architecture, New Relic OTel
For a team with substantial historical searches, retaining data that still serves audit or investigation needs is often more practical than equating consolidation with moving everything at once. Guance also provides log-to-trace correlation over collected data. If the aim is to reduce switching during application troubleshooting, compare that workflow. Replacement of security searches and reports remains a separate decision; APM correlation is not a substitute for it.
Security operations have their own objects and workflow
Enterprise Security risk-based detection organizes evidence around assets, identities, risk scores, and behavioral conditions. Ingesting logs is a prerequisite; usable fields, detection logic, and analysts handling findings are still required. This is a different scope from displaying vulnerabilities or application exceptions. Enterprise Security risk analysis
New Relic's security-related features do not establish a drop-in replacement for an existing SIEM. Conversely, security auditing does not describe everything Splunk does. Specify whether the intended replacement is vulnerability management, log alerting, threat detection, or the broader security operating process.
Self-hosting is not automatic compliance either. Access, retention, backups, audit trails, and organizational procedures still need implementation. Control over deployment answers only part of that requirement.
Follow the data path through the quote
Splunk currently lists activity-based, workload, and ingest options for Platform, with separate product arrangements for Observability and Security. One GB or compute-unit price does not describe the entire portfolio. When the connector queries Platform, the Platform portion of the bill remains. Splunk pricing
New Relic offers Data + User and a Data + Core Compute option in Preview, with retention and advanced-compute conditions. Compare equivalent log volume, trace collection, query activity, users, and retention windows. New Relic billing
An organization with mature Splunk log and security practices can consider Observability Cloud as a way to reuse that data. A team centered on application investigation and established New Relic queries may gain more by retaining those workflows. The useful decision identifies who will operate each part, which searches remain valid, and where duplicate work disappears. Saying that both products are expensive answers none of those questions.
