Dynatrace vs SigNoz: what remains after OTel connects
Compare Dynatrace and SigNoz through OTel ingestion, OneAgent evidence, current deployment components, operating responsibility and migration costs.
The services already export through an OpenTelemetry Collector, so the team sends a second copy to SigNoz. On day one, charts and traces appear. Changing backends seems almost finished—until an engineer investigates a delayed asynchronous order and finds inconsistent service names, disconnected queue operations and no familiar path to process evidence.
That is the useful question in a Dynatrace–SigNoz comparison: once telemetry reaches another backend, can the investigation continue? Standard instrumentation creates options, but application collection, backend operation and everyday workflows remain separate pieces of the migration.

A new endpoint does not standardize service meaning
SigNoz uses OpenTelemetry as its main collection foundation. Its OTel Collector receives and processes telemetry before writing to ClickHouse, accepting data directly from applications or through existing Collectors. The product combines logs, metrics and traces rather than serving only as a trace viewer. Architecture.
An asynchronous order still requires context to cross the queue, meaningful producer and consumer operations, and consistent service and environment identifiers. An order number in a log can support a manual lookup without a trace ID, but storing both signals in one backend does not automatically join them.
Start duplicate delivery with one understood business path. Keep success, timeout and retry examples, then compare timestamps, service boundaries, error states and important business attributes. This separates missing collection from differences in how the backend presents the evidence.
Dynatrace itself supports direct OTLP and Collector ingestion. Choosing OTel does not require abandoning Dynatrace at the same time. A team can standardize application output before deciding which analysis work to move. Dynatrace OTel ingestion.
Make an explicit plan for OneAgent evidence
OneAgent deep monitoring can supply method, process and profiling evidence in supported runtimes. Moving to an OTel SDK may change automatic instrumentation coverage, business spans and resource collection. Seeing a trace arrive proves delivery, not equivalence with the previous investigation. Full-Stack scope, support matrix.
During coexistence, understand how OneAgent and OTel interact. Dynatrace's OTel Span Sensor can capture relevant OTel API calls; sending the same data back to Dynatrace through OTLP can create duplicates. Language and version behavior needs checking against the documented configuration. OneAgent and OTel.
Routing one telemetry stream to two backends differs from generating two streams with overlapping instrumentation. The first adds export traffic, queues and consumption; the second can also change trace structure. Investigate those paths before interpreting doubled request counts as business growth.
A Collector is not an unlimited buffer either. OTel documents sending queues and retries for remote exporters, with persistent storage available to protect against restarts. Full queues, exhausted retries and disk failures still present loss scenarios. Test whether an unavailable destination affects the other path under the actual pipeline configuration. Collector resiliency.
Installing SigNoz and operating it are different jobs
Current Docker documentation changes the installation path: from v0.130, the legacy install.sh and repository Compose setup are deprecated in favor of Foundry-generated configuration. The current example includes ClickHouse, ClickHouse Keeper and PostgreSQL metadata alongside SigNoz and its Collector. Describing the stack as simply one ClickHouse instance misses that operational scope. Docker installation.
The tooling helps bring an environment up; single-machine Compose does not make it highly available. Long-term operation requires a plan for growth, recovery, component upgrades, disk headroom and query peaks. Choosing ClickHouse is a storage-engine decision, not a promise that maintenance disappears.
If historical queries compete with ingestion, extending a UI timeout is not the whole remedy. Operators need to distinguish wide scans, background storage work and insufficient capacity. They should be able to move from the observability interface to database and Collector health, and revisit capacity when retention changes.
Responsibility also depends on deployment. SigNoz Cloud is managed; Enterprise Self-Hosted is customer-operated with vendor support; BYOC is operated by SigNoz in the customer's cloud. Data residing in your cloud does not, by itself, mean your team runs every component. Enterprise deployment options.
Open collection does not migrate the workflow
The SigNoz repository uses MIT outside specified enterprise directories and other exceptions, with enterprise and third-party code governed separately. Assess the version and capabilities required rather than treating the entire commercial product as free. Repository license.
OTel reduces application dependence on proprietary instrumentation, but dashboards, queries, alerts, permissions, history and automation still require migration. An error-rate alert previously based on all requests may change meaning when rebuilt over retained, sampled spans. Recheck its numerator and denominator rather than just changing the service name.
For an asynchronous order, preserve the business definition: the acceptable delay from acceptance to completion, when a retry becomes a failure, and who responds to queue backlog versus slow processing. Reconstruct those meanings in the new platform before judging the dashboard equivalent.
Retiring the old system also needs criteria rather than an arbitrary timetable. Validate critical alerts, historical investigations, access and recovery before deciding how long to keep the old query interface. An audit requirement for three months of history is different from a habit of consulting the previous UI for another three months.
Budget against the same business path
Dynatrace DPS host-based Full-Stack uses GiB-hours measured in fifteen-minute intervals, rounding memory up to multiples of 0.25 GiB with a 4 GiB per-host minimum. Logs and other capabilities add consumption. It is not a single host-count subscription covering everything. Metering.
SigNoz Cloud currently meters log and trace volume and metric samples, with a minimum monthly charge and retention terms. Self-hosting instead requires infrastructure, commercial support where applicable and maintenance effort. Dividing a Cloud unit price by another platform's complete contract does not establish a reliable savings multiple. SigNoz plans.
For the same order flow, specify sampling, log retention and metric collection frequency, then measure normal and peak days. Include duplicate delivery during transition and any collection needed to replace process evidence after removing OneAgent. A lower bill achieved by silently losing evidence is a change in scope, not an equivalent price comparison.
Migrate an investigation before a platform
Teams already organized around OTel, and willing to operate a backend or choose an appropriate managed service, have a reason to evaluate SigNoz. Teams heavily dependent on OneAgent runtime evidence should first identify what must remain and what new instrumentation can replace. Continuing to use Dynatrace is compatible with adopting OTel.
A useful milestone is that the delayed order can still be detected, explained and handed to the right person in the new system. Expanding after that makes the effects of migration easier to understand than copying every service at once.
Keep the ingestion path testable in Guance
Guance also supports relevant OTel ingestion. To evaluate another backend, reuse the same business example and inspect resource attributes, trace context and log correlation.
