Dynatrace vs. Sumo Logic: connect application and security investigations

Compare application context, Flex scans, Grail retention, Cloud SIEM processing, and the costs of keeping both platforms.

Application and infrastructure monitoring illustration

A login endpoint slows down. Minutes later, the security team notices unusual access involving some of the same accounts. Application engineers need to explain where requests waited; security analysts need to reconstruct identities, source addresses, and privilege changes. They may be investigating one incident, but a slow trace does not establish a compromise, and suspicious login records do not explain a blocked thread.

That handoff is a useful starting point for Dynatrace versus Sumo Logic. Teams using OneAgent want to preserve runtime evidence. Teams using Sumo Logic for log investigation and security analysis need workable data organization and query scope. Both products extend beyond their traditional labels.

Follow the service before deciding where logs belong

Dynatrace Full-Stack Monitoring supplies request, code, process, and host context in supported OneAgent environments. An investigation can move from a degraded service into a call and its resource conditions. Coverage depends on runtime, platform, and monitoring mode; a successful installation does not establish instrumentation across every method, queue, or older framework. Sumo Logic also offers APM, RUM, span analysis, and service maps. Its maps derive from incoming distributed traces, with service details leading to traces, metrics, and dashboards. There is no sound basis for dismissing all of this as a weak infrastructure supplement without evaluating the actual environment. APM and Services List and Map

For login, check whether context survives from the browser through the API and identity service, and whether errors, timing, and resource attributes align. Spans from both sides of a queue do not necessarily form one trace if propagation is missing. Dynatrace also accepts OTel, so adopting standard instrumentation need not immediately change the backend. Dynatrace OpenTelemetry ingestion

Preserve the evidence people use. If OneAgent process and profiling details are essential, keep them while evaluating a different log destination. A team already investigating through OTel and structured logs may choose a wider migration.

A more selective result may still require the same scan

Current Sumo Logic Flex centers log charging on analytics and scanning; its FAQ states that ingestion and indexing are not charged. This is distinct from the older Continuous, Frequent, and Infrequent tier design. Existing Cloud Flex accounts also have a separate applicability boundary, so legacy hot/cold pricing is not an explanation for every account. Flex pricing

Partition and time selection matter. A narrow error keyword usually does not reduce scanned volume the way selecting fewer partitions does. When login and payment logs share a large partition, searching for one account may still scan the selected period across that partition. Organizing frequently independent investigations into appropriate partitions can be more useful than adding another filter word.

This illustrative scope assumes an actual partition named auth_prod; it is not a tested performance example:

_index=auth_prod AND _sourceCategory=prod/auth

Changing it to _index=auth_prod OR error can expand the scan because error may occur elsewhere. A migrated scheduled search therefore needs review of both its result semantics and the partitions it scans. Flex scope optimization

Dynatrace SaaS logs in Grail support DQL analysis. Standard log consumption separates ingestion, retention, and query scans, while Retain with Included Queries offers a different model. That option has a configured window and a 24-hour scan allowance of 15 times the retained GiB within it. Dynatrace describes assistance with evaluating and optimizing consumption above the allowance, not unlimited queries. Log licensing and included-query retention

Occasional historical investigations and continuously repeated broad detection queries create different workloads. Record frequency, partition scope, retention, and investigation habits alongside daily ingestion.

Security investigation has its own processing path

Sumo Logic Cloud SIEM parses, maps, normalizes, and enriches messages into records. Detection rules generate signals, which support entity-centered investigation. Consistent identities and timestamps affect those relationships: collecting all logs does not itself establish an effective detection pipeline. Record processing and Cloud SIEM rules

Cloud SIEM requires the relevant product to be enabled. Its records and signals use a dedicated security data tier; security-index queries do not count as Flex scans. That does not make Cloud SIEM free, or make ordinary application-log scan rules applicable to security data. Product access and security scan scope

For the login incident, application engineers can contribute affected services, timing, and deployment information. Analysts continue through identity, source, and behavior. Correlation can help distinguish unusual traffic, privilege problems, and ordinary performance regressions, but the underlying evidence should remain available to challenge an automated finding.

If security operations is part of the purchase, evaluate the corresponding security product and detection workflow. Dynatrace APM and a complete Cloud SIEM deployment are not interchangeable bundles, and effective application troubleshooting does not automatically satisfy every audit requirement.

Coexistence only removes the consumption actually retired

Moving historical logs while retaining Dynatrace application monitoring is a possible division of work. It does not remove Full-Stack consumption while OneAgent remains active. Current DPS host-based Full-Stack uses memory GiB-hours, a 4 GiB minimum per host, rounding up in 0.25 GiB increments, and 15-minute calculation intervals—not simply host count. Host metering

Sumo Logic likewise distinguishes Flex scanning, retention, and other telemetry or product credits. A shared credit unit does not give logs, metrics, traces, and SIEM one interchangeable price. Flex accounts and credits

Duplicate delivery adds export traffic, field processing, permissions, and retention policies. More importantly, an investigation can fail at the connection: the trace may have expired while logs remain, or a service name may mean different things in each environment. Reproduce a known incident across the systems before expanding the split.

The Grail and current DPS discussion here concerns Dynatrace SaaS. Managed does not automatically include new applications dependent on Grail and AppEngine. Sumo Logic SaaS region, ingestion, and contract scope must likewise match the actual account. Dynatrace Clouds prerequisites

Choose around the handoff that repeatedly slows response

When investigations stall between requests, processes, and hosts, prioritize testing Dynatrace's supported deep-monitoring path. When daily work centers on partitioned log searches, detection rules, and security handoffs, prioritize testing Sumo Logic against those workflows. Evaluate the overlapping APM and log capabilities instead of excluding either product by label.

Acceptance for the login incident should explain where requests waited, which accounts were affected, what supports the security finding, and the consumption required to retain and repeatedly query that evidence. That is a stronger purchasing basis than assuming logs always become cheaper elsewhere.

Check request-to-log correlation in Guance

Guance supports associating logs with collected traces. Follow the same request and check service identity, time, and trace ID before deciding whether the workflow fits. Correlation cannot recover uncollected data or replace detection rules and access design. Guance log correlation
