Grafana Cloud vs. Coralogix: decide how retained logs will be used
Compare Loki labels, Coralogix priorities and customer storage, historical queries, and consumption through an order investigation.
A customer reports an order problem with an order ID and an approximate date. They do not know which service handled it. The support engineer expands the search to last week and discovers that the usual “known service, last fifteen minutes” workflow is no longer enough. Retention, data location, and the route from a log to its request now matter more than the number of charts on a dashboard.
Grafana Cloud and Coralogix both handle multiple telemetry signals. This investigation exposes a practical difference in how they organize logs. Grafana Cloud's Loki selects streams through labels, then queries content and metadata. Coralogix can route data between priorities with different storage and analytical capabilities. This comparison uses managed-product documentation checked on October 21, 2026. Self-hosted Loki is not Grafana Cloud, and owning an S3 bucket does not mean operating the entire Coralogix platform.
Give the order ID an appropriate home
In Loki, stable attributes such as service and environment make useful low-cardinality stream labels. Promoting every order ID, user ID, or trace ID into an indexed label creates many stream combinations. Structured metadata carries high-cardinality attributes without making them index labels; JSON business fields can also be parsed during a query. Loki labels, Structured metadata
Suppose checkout emits JSON containing order_id, and service_name is an existing stream label. This illustrative query searches for the order:
{service_name="checkout"} | json | __error__="" | order_id="A-1042"
It selects streams, parses JSON, excludes parsing errors, and filters the business field. Names and fields must match the ingestion configuration. Searching across several services requires a broader selector and generally more data processing. Loki supports content filtering and parsing; “it cannot search log text” is inaccurate. Its index model alone also cannot establish a universal performance ranking. LogQL log queries
For investigations that begin with an alert from a known service, existing labels and Grafana workflows offer a convenient starting point. Investigations that begin with a fragment of business context require more deliberate field retention and query scoping. Missing data cannot be added retrospectively during an incident.
Coralogix priorities describe how data will be used
Coralogix High, or Frequent Search, uses hot OpenSearch storage. Medium, or Monitoring, and Low, or Compliance, retain raw data in customer storage and expose it through DataPrime. Low provides fewer capabilities than High and Medium. Being able to retrieve a payment-error record after moving it to Low does not mean the same alerts and dashboards remain available. TCO Optimizer
Separate frequently investigated recent events, ongoing monitoring data, and records mainly retained for later reconstruction. Priorities should follow those uses. Downgrading everything and testing only whether a record can still be found misses the real-time processing on which the team may depend.
This is not an architecture in which every byte exists only in a customer bucket and no indexing path exists. Hot search is a real option, and customer storage must be configured correctly. Owning the objects also does not make query interfaces, rules, dashboards, or access policies portable without work. An exit plan needs to account for those assets as well as the files.
Bring last week's evidence back into the investigation
Coralogix Explore can query S3 archives directly through DataPrime, Lucene, and related search paths, without reindexing every investigation's data first. Permissions and limits still apply to processed bytes, scanned files, and returned results. Seeing several thousand records is not equivalent to exporting the entire archive. Broad investigations may need narrower filters or the appropriate archive and background-query workflow. Archive queries
Someone must also own the archive lifecycle. Retention tags can work with cloud-storage lifecycle policies, while storage-side rules control deletion. Increasing a retention option cannot restore objects already deleted by a bucket policy. Routing, object retention, and investigation permissions need to implement the same business requirement. Policy configuration
Grafana Cloud investigations depend on the configured log-retention period. Extending retention does not recover logs that have already expired. If logs outlive traces, an order record may remain searchable while its trace is no longer available. That is a retention mismatch between signals, not necessarily a broken correlation link. Moving from a log to an application takes context
Grafana Cloud Application Observability provides service and request-metric workflows with related telemetry. Its current Knowledge Graph experience differs from the classic interface. Teams with Prometheus metrics, consistent OTel service attributes, and Grafana dashboards can extend familiar entry points into request investigations. Ingesting Loki logs alone does not enable the whole application product. Application Observability
Coralogix also provides APM, a service catalog, and service maps. Log-priority decisions should be considered alongside the data paths used for application analysis. For the same order, trace IDs, span relationships, and service attributes determine whether moving from a record to its request is useful. Coralogix APM
A focused evaluation need not include the whole estate. Choose a path through gateway, checkout, and payment, and investigate one success and one failure in each platform: locate the business record, identify the request, then return to the relevant service changes. This distinguishes platform behavior from incomplete instrumentation.
Include everyday investigations in the estimate
Grafana Cloud meters logs along four dimensions: processed, written, retained, and queried. Adaptive Telemetry dropping can reduce written volume, but processing is measured before optimization. Queries beyond the fair-use allowance may also incur charges. Compressed object size is therefore not a complete estimate of the log bill. Log billing
The Application Observability product adds host hours to the metrics, logs, traces, and profiles it uses. Building your own dashboards and alerts instead does not incur that product's host-hour charge. Older account arrangements can differ from the current model; do not apply historic credits to every account. Application Observability billing
Coralogix uses consumption units with different conversions for signals and priorities. Blocked logs still have an ingestion-processing charge. Add customer-bucket storage, requests, and applicable transfer charges, then identify the priorities used by typical investigations. Neither product has a single context-free “total price per GB” that settles the comparison. Coralogix usage pricing
Choose the organization of data your team can maintain
Grafana Cloud is a natural continuation for teams already using Grafana and Prometheus, usually investigating a known service, and willing to maintain labels and field conventions. Coralogix deserves particular attention when log-use policies, customer archives, and historical investigation drive the design.
The useful decision is whether last week's order can be explained completely, and what maintaining that path costs. Without workload evidence, an indexing slogan, an entry price, or a vendor's location cannot establish a universal winner on performance, cost, or compliance.
Check the same order in Guance
When evaluating Guance, follow the order log into its related trace. Trace identifiers, service fields, and time selection must be configured correctly, and both signals must remain within retention. Completing that path provides a concrete basis for judging the fit with everyday investigations. Guance log correlation
