Grafana Cloud vs LogicMonitor: keeping visibility during a branch outage
Follow a branch outage through SNMP collection, collector failover, instance discovery and application evidence, then compare the billing units.
A branch application slows down just as its switch-interface charts stop updating. Has the network failed, or has the machine collecting the measurements failed? Without that distinction, additional alerts may simply send the same blind spot to more people.
Grafana Cloud and LogicMonitor both cover hybrid environments. The useful comparison is how devices enter monitoring, how their changing instances are discovered, what happens when a collector fails, and how device evidence reaches the application team. Those operating details matter more than the number of dashboards available.

A switch does not require starting with an empty dashboard
Grafana Cloud has an SNMP integration with Alloy configuration, prebuilt dashboards and alerts, including additional MIB support for selected vendors. Devices still need SNMP enabled and suitable credentials, and the collector must reach them. Log collection requires configuring Syslog forwarding as well. The claim that every panel must be built from scratch is outdated. SNMP integration.
Prebuilt content helps with setup but does not validate a particular device. Check interface names, bandwidth, counters and vendor-specific fields. One populated interface counter proves that one collection path works, not that every link is covered.
LogicMonitor typically runs a Linux or Windows Collector inside the environment and accesses assigned resources through supported protocols. DataSources define measurements, presentation and values requiring attention. Agentless monitoring means a component need not be installed on every monitored resource; collection software still runs in the customer's environment. Collector operation.
A Grafana team maintains Alloy configuration, labels and existing rules. A LogicMonitor team maintains resource properties, DataSource matching and Collector assignments. Familiarity with that work can explain migration effort more accurately than a “cloud-native versus traditional” label.
Discover the interfaces inside the device
Finding a switch and discovering its interfaces are different tasks. LogicMonitor's SNMP Active Discovery can walk OIDs to discover instances, obtain names or descriptions, and apply filters. SNMP instance discovery.
Check what happens after discovery: whether new interfaces are enabled, retired interfaces keep useful history, and changed descriptions remain understandable to the on-call team. Those behaviors determine whether an alert still identifies the right object. A successful initial device count is insufficient.
Grafana's SNMP documentation distinguishes simple configuration for a few static targets from advanced configuration for dynamic targets and enriched Syslog. Design target discovery, device metadata and labels together. An asset system may supply targets, but support for Prometheus does not mean that integration is already configured.
During a migration, choose devices that change regularly. Add an interface, change its description, and inspect identity and history in both systems. Preserve maintenance windows, exception thresholds and notification ownership too. Better coverage can otherwise produce more paging rather than better visibility.
A failover setting does not create a network path
LogicMonitor Collectors communicate with the cloud through outbound HTTPS; internal collection requires the appropriate protocol ports. Cloud availability does not establish reachability to a switch, and a running Collector process does not establish that credentials remain valid.
One-to-one failover requires a second server with matching collection capabilities and configuration, the same operating system, and access through relevant firewalls. Auto-Balanced Collector Groups have their own takeover mechanism. Naming a backup Collector without giving it a route to the branch devices cannot make failover succeed. Failover requirements.
Grafana Cloud operates the backend, but it cannot repair an unreachable Alloy host. Fleet Management provides inventory and remote configuration for onboarded collectors; the customer still owns network placement, device credentials and local resources. Alloy Fleet Management.
Capacity also depends on more than device count. LogicMonitor documents how collection-method mixes, instance counts and discovery overhead affect Collector capacity. Inspect task availability, queues, CPU and memory before resizing or distributing work. A laboratory capacity figure for one protocol is not a guarantee for an arbitrary mixed environment. Collector capacity.
Connect a device problem to an affected request
Packet loss and order latency occurring at the same time are still only correlated evidence. Establish which resource uses the interface, whether the application traverses that path, and whether a deployment or traffic change occurred nearby. Network topology and an application trace describe different layers.
LogicMonitor offers OpenTelemetry-based distributed tracing, with trace investigation alongside resources, metrics and contextual logs. It requires application instrumentation and the appropriate OTel forwarding path. Installing an infrastructure Collector does not automatically produce spans for every service. Distributed tracing.
Grafana Cloud can likewise investigate services and requests from application telemetry, but the SNMP integration does not create a business call chain. Have device and application owners hand off the same incident during a trial rather than demonstrate unrelated overview pages. If both platforms remain, establish resource names, shared time windows, links and alert ownership to avoid paging twice for the same failure.
A device inventory does not translate directly into a series bill
LogicMonitor's current platform packages use Hybrid Units. One unit can represent one on-premises Collector-monitored device, one cloud IaaS resource, seven cloud PaaS resources, five wireless access points, or 100 GB of OTel metrics. Confirm combinations, package entitlements and additional capabilities in the contract. This is more specific than charging the same amount for every item called a device. Current plans.
Grafana Cloud Metrics measures active series and data points per minute. Two devices with different interface, metric and label counts can generate very different usage, while shorter collection intervals increase DPM. Billing takes the monthly 95th percentiles of active series and total DPM separately, then uses the larger of active series and total DPM divided by the plan’s included DPM. It is not a flat multiplier on an asset list. Metrics billing.
Measure the actual metric count and collection frequency for a representative device group, then separately include required logs and application products. Both services also require allowance for collection hosts, network transfer and operating time. A free tier or raw device count cannot settle long-term cost.
Choose the operating model you can maintain
Prioritize LogicMonitor when discovery, thresholds and Collector assignments for network, storage and virtualization instances make up much of the daily work. Verify unusual devices and collector handoffs between sites.
Grafana Cloud's SNMP integration is a reasonable starting point for teams already comfortable with Prometheus and Grafana that want device measurements in existing application and infrastructure workflows. Teams prepared to maintain targets, labels and rules can preserve those investments instead of introducing a platform solely because switches are involved.
Avoid deciding from a rule such as “more than half our alerts concern hardware.” Alert volume depends on rule quality. Compare the evidence needed for critical failures and the people responsible for maintaining it.
Evaluate the device-to-application handoff in Guance
Guance DataKit provides SNMP collection. Start with supported devices, verify measurements and identifying fields, then compare them with application evidence from the incident window. Protocols, credentials and reachability still need configuration. The useful outcome is a clearer handoff, not a promise that adding a platform automatically explains every network failure.
