Grafana Cloud vs Sentry: taking a frontend regression from error to fix

Compare error grouping, source maps, request correlation, replay, alerts and billing through a checkout regression, with current product and deployment boundaries.

Applications and telemetry on an engineering workbench

After a checkout release, a few users click Pay and nothing happens. Backend success rates still look normal, while the frontend reports a cluster of similar exceptions. The failure might precede the API call or occur while rendering its response. Neither infrastructure health nor an error count identifies the right fix on its own.

Sentry organizes work around Issues, build artifacts and resolution. Grafana Cloud Frontend Observability can bring browser evidence into an existing application and infrastructure investigation. Their overlap is now substantial. Compare the path from an error to a verified fix rather than assigning one product to developers and the other to operations.

Group errors without hiding the distinction that matters

Sentry groups events with matching fingerprints into an Issue. Its default algorithms use stack traces, exceptions and messages, and grouping can be customized. Repeated reports become manageable work, but membership in one Issue does not prove a single root cause. Issue grouping.

The same null-value exception might follow an older API response or a canceled action. If both fail in the same function, inspect page, release and request context before changing the fingerprint. Overly narrow grouping can fragment one failure into many Issues that are harder to maintain.

Grafana Cloud also provides frontend error fingerprinting, using normalized stacks, files and messages, with custom fingerprints available. Its documentation explains how different messages passing through the same function and file can be grouped together. Sentry is therefore not the only option capable of grouping related errors. Grafana error fingerprinting.

Try errors that are easy to confuse and check whether the resulting groups match repair ownership across releases. A feature checkbox cannot establish that workflow.

Put source maps in the release process

A minified JavaScript stack is difficult to connect to application code. Sentry's default source-map workflow injects Debug IDs into build output, with bundler plugins and CLI upload options. The artifacts must match what was deployed; a fresh local build is not an interchangeable substitute. Source-map setup.

Grafana Frontend Observability supports source maps too, and resolved function names and paths help improve fingerprinting. Evaluate timely uploads, failure detection and access to artifacts for rolled-back releases. Frontend capabilities.

A readable code location is still a starting point. A missing response field may throw during rendering. Adding a null check can reduce visible failures without explaining why the API returned incomplete data. Follow the request before treating the displayed line as the whole cause.

Connect browser and backend evidence explicitly

Grafana Faro collects browser performance, errors, logs and client-side traces. Session-to-trace correlation requires its web-tracing package; backend instrumentation and context propagation are needed to continue into the service. Session investigation.

Sentry separates error sampling from transaction sampling. In JavaScript, sampleRate governs errors, while tracesSampleRate or tracesSampler governs transactions. With neither tracing option set, the documented default sends no transactions. An Issue therefore does not guarantee that a complete request trace accompanies it. JavaScript sampling.

Check environment and service identifiers, propagation and retention in both products, including cross-origin APIs and asynchronous work. During a dual-SDK trial, also examine duplicate collection, network instrumentation interactions and transmitted volume. Trial-specific overhead should not be mistaken for either product's normal standalone cost.

Replay needs sampling and privacy decisions

Sentry Replay masks text and blocks media by default, but its documentation still requires verifying privacy settings before production use. Recheck sensitive pages after changing masking, frameworks or SDKs. Defaults do not validate an entire application. Replay privacy.

Grafana Cloud now has Session Replay, currently in public preview as of this review. Its support and stability should not be represented as those of a generally available feature. Replay is additional Faro instrumentation; the current quickstart requires Faro 2.8.2 or later and excludes Canvas and WebGL. Replay quickstart.

Grafana replay also has two sampling layers. Faro first decides whether a session is collected; Replay's samplingRate then selects which collected sessions receive recordings. Text and input values are masked client-side by default. A missing recording can reflect sampling or instrumentation rather than a failed query. Replay behavior.

For checkout, verify that important interactions remain understandable without exposing forms, order details or sensitive state. Replay shows the user-facing sequence; other telemetry is still needed to explain backend waits and business outcomes. Evaluate preview functionality separately against the team's tolerance for change.

Alerts and billing extend beyond error counts

Sentry supports alerts for Issues, metrics, logs and other supported signals. Collection, conditions and plan determine the usable scope. It does not automatically replace infrastructure monitoring, but saying it cannot alert on metrics is incorrect. Monitors and Alerts.

Grafana Frontend Observability also provides preset and custom alerts. Assign notification ownership, escalation into backend teams and recovery criteria. If both products page, keep a clear incident owner.

Sentry's current pricing separates Errors, Logs, App Metrics, Replays, Spans and Profiling usage, with plan entitlements and additional products to consider. Current pricing. Grafana Frontend Observability measures sessions plus generated logs and traces. Customers starting on or after February 13, 2026 use a newer model without telemetry credits; earlier customers have different allowances. Frontend billing.

One visit is not one error, and an error is not a complete trace. Estimate from actual sessions, error rates, sampling and retention so that enabling another signal does not invalidate the original budget.

Fit the repair process into the existing platform

Prioritize Sentry when the immediate need is a daily repair workflow around errors, releases and source code. If Grafana Cloud already supports application and infrastructure operations, evaluate Frontend Observability for carrying browser evidence into that context. Decide separately whether its preview Replay is appropriate.

Deployment requirements can change the result. Self-hosted Sentry excludes closed-source AI/ML features such as Seer and leaves operations with the customer. Its FSL licensing and the corresponding version's transition to Apache 2.0 after two years do not mean all current code is Apache-licensed. Grafana Cloud is likewise distinct from deploying Grafana components yourself. Sentry self-hosting.

Using both can be reasonable when Sentry's repair workflow complements established Grafana operations. It is not the automatic answer: account for duplicated signals, identity, alert ownership and continued access to history.
