New Relic vs Grafana Cloud: Building on an Existing Metrics Estate
Compare New Relic and Grafana Cloud from an existing Prometheus estate: application investigation, external data-source responsibilities and current billing inputs.
A team has maintained Prometheus alerts and Grafana dashboards for years, yet still gets stuck after a release: latency rises across several services, but which request first went wrong? One proposal is to move application investigation into New Relic. Another is to preserve the metrics estate and adopt Grafana Cloud.
Either can make sense. The useful questions concern existing queries and alerts, the path from a metric to a request, and the work that remains after moving to a managed service. Grafana Cloud is more than a hosted dashboard interface. New Relic's unified environment does not automatically supply missing correlation fields.
Keeping a backend is different from keeping a query
Grafana Cloud's data-source model includes its hosted telemetry services and connections to external systems. Querying an existing Prometheus server is a different arrangement from writing metrics into Grafana Cloud.
The first retains the original backend's storage and maintenance responsibilities. The second moves data to a managed service but requires checking collection, retention and consumption. A working dashboard query does not prove that recording rules, alert permissions and notification routes migrated with it.
External sources also have network and plugin constraints. Grafana Cloud does not allow arbitrary private or unsigned plugins. Private data source connect uses an agent deployed by the customer to reach supported sources in private networks. It supplies a connection, not database administration or an automatic copy of historical data.
If the trial only connects old dashboards to a new interface, evaluate the improved query entry point. Do not count it as a complete platform migration.
A latency chart needs a real path to the request
Existing Prometheus labels may already express service, cluster and environment conventions. They do not necessarily match the service.name resource attribute on traces or the identifier stored in logs.
Grafana's trace-to-logs configuration maps span attributes into log queries. Labels and time windows must agree. A clickable link is only a beginning: if it returns every log for the service, check trace filtering and whether the identifier actually exists.
New Relic's logs in context adds trace, span and entity metadata through supported agents. With native OTLP ingestion, resource attributes and signal formats still need attention. A unified platform can shorten navigation but cannot invent a relationship absent from the data.
Use a release regression as the trial. Start from the same latency alert, isolate the affected version, then open a slow request and its logs. Compare the completeness of the explanation under real permissions and sampling, not which chart appears first. Each manual service-name translation or time-window adjustment identifies maintenance work.
Grafana Cloud now includes an application investigation layer
Describing Grafana Cloud as separate Loki, Tempo and metric panels misses current Application Observability. The knowledge-graph experience for new organizations discovers services and relationships from telemetry and connects metrics, logs, traces and profiles. Existing classic installations and the newer path should be evaluated separately rather than applying old setup assumptions to every account.
The new experience still depends on collection quality. Its instrumentation guide uses OpenTelemetry instrumentation, Alloy or another Collector, and resource attributes identifying services. Existing exporters and business metrics do not spontaneously generate application spans.
The distinction is therefore not APM versus no APM. Compare runtime coverage, existing configuration, investigation defaults and how missing data is diagnosed. Automatic discovery organizes evidence; it does not prove that a discovered dependency caused a particular outage.
Managed storage still needs configuration owners
Grafana Cloud can remove cluster maintenance for its managed backends, while Collectors, scrape targets, label conventions and external sources remain. New Relic SaaS also leaves business attributes, sampling and alerts to maintain. Define what application teams and platform teams each own.
When preserving PromQL, replay representative alerts and check windows, missing data and grouping. When moving investigation to New Relic, reproduce the corresponding NRQL and alert semantics rather than copying chart titles. Two panels named “error rate” can use different denominators, filters or aggregation periods.
A temporary dual-export or parallel-query period can validate the transition. Separate that cost from steady state and avoid duplicate notifications. Before ending it, have on-call staff verify old incident links, recent baselines and historical queries. The effort required to recover history does not appear in a dashboard screenshot.
Metric labels and frequency both affect usage
Grafana Cloud's metric billing measures active series and data points per minute at their respective billing-period P95 values. Usage follows the greater of active series and total DPM divided by included DPM. Counting metric names alone misses both label combinations and collection frequency.
For example, 10,000 fixed series scraped every 15 seconds generate approximately 40,000 points per minute. Moving to 60 seconds changes DPM without necessarily changing series count. Adding constantly changing request identifiers can increase cardinality substantially. This describes workload input, not a plan-specific quote; inspect existing scrapes and labels before comparing rates.
Log billing separates processing, writing, retention and queries above a fair-use allowance. Adaptive Telemetry can reduce written volume without erasing processing already incurred. Application Observability and other products have their own meters, as the billing overview explains. Metrics cost alone is not the platform total.
New Relic's base models combine data with users or Core Compute, which remains marked Preview. Advanced Compute covers additional usage. This cannot be converted into a meaningful comparison with active-series pricing using a single per-GB number. Measure each model's inputs on the same workload.
Existing work determines the starting point
If Prometheus queries, alerts and dashboards are the team's established operational language, evaluate Grafana Cloud by preserving those assets and adding application investigation. State which backends remain self-managed and which data enters hosted services before estimating the operational reduction.
If engineers want to organize work around application entities and a common investigation environment, New Relic is a candidate—but include rule conversion, permissions and historical baselines. A team already using New Relic need not replace everything simply to adopt open collection; first test its native OTLP path.
There is no context-free winner for cost or usability. Let another engineer follow a release regression from alert to explanation, recording the people, data and configuration required along the way.
Continue from a metric alert in Guance
The same exercise can use Guance's trace details: locate a retained request, then inspect related logs and service context. A metric identifies timing and impact; correlated request evidence helps explain it. Fields, sampling and retention still need to work together.
