Duplicate a Grafana dashboard without overwriting the original
Create a dashboard copy or export and import its JSON, while checking shared library panels, data sources, and alert rules.
Use Grafana's dashboard copy or Save as action when it is available, give the copy a distinct name, and select the destination folder. For a move between Grafana instances, export the dashboard JSON and import it into the destination instead.
Save a separate dashboard
Open the source dashboard and look for Save as, or the equivalent copy action in its save or dashboard menu. Menu placement changes across Grafana releases, so do not depend on a particular gear icon or a universal Duplicate button in the dashboard list.
Choose a new title and folder, save, and verify that the new dashboard has its own URL or UID before editing it. Check permissions on the destination folder; copying a dashboard does not establish the desired access policy automatically.
Export and import JSON
Use the dashboard's export option to save its JSON, then use Import in the target instance. External-sharing export options can replace data-source references with inputs that the recipient selects during import.
Review the proposed title, UID, folder, and data sources. Avoid importing over an existing UID unintentionally. Importing dashboard JSON does not copy data-source credentials or create the underlying databases. Referenced plugins must also be available in the target instance.
Know which pieces remain shared
The dashboard definition includes panel layout, queries, variables, and annotation configuration. That does not mean every external object is cloned. Library panels can remain linked to shared library objects; changes to those objects can affect more than one dashboard. Unlink or create separate library panels if you need independent panel definitions.
Grafana-managed alert rules are separate resources. Copying dashboard JSON is not a complete alert-rule migration, even when panels contain links or annotations associated with alerts. Export, provision, or recreate the rules through the appropriate alerting workflow and verify their data-source references.
Copy just one panel
A panel's Duplicate action creates another panel in the same dashboard. To reuse it elsewhere, use the panel copy workflow offered by your version and paste it into the target dashboard. Again, check whether the result is a standalone panel or a reference to a library panel.
