Add safe senders in Outlook

Manage Outlook’s Safe Senders list, restore messages from Junk Email, and distinguish mailbox preferences from organization-wide protection.

Best practices
Add safe senders in Outlook

Add a trusted address to Outlook's Safe Senders list to reduce ordinary spam misclassification. This does not guarantee delivery or override malware, high-confidence phishing, or organizational policy.

Add a safe sender

Outlook on the web and new Outlook

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Mail → Junk email. Some versions expose this under View all Outlook settings.
  3. Find Safe senders and domains and choose the add action.
  4. Enter a full address, such as alerts@example.com, or a domain such as example.com.
  5. Save the change.

Classic Outlook for Windows

  1. Choose Home → Junk → Junk E-mail Options.
  2. Open Safe Senders, select Add, and enter an address or domain.
  3. If appropriate, enable Also trust email from my Contacts.

Controls and available settings vary by Outlook version and account type.

Restore a message from Junk Email

Open Junk Email, select the message, and choose Not Junk or the corresponding “not junk” action. Move it to the Inbox and, where offered, add the sender to the safe list.

Marking one message as legitimate does not prove that every future message claiming that sender is legitimate.

Add a contact as a supporting measure

Open the sender's contact card and use Add to Outlook contacts. In classic Outlook, whether contacts are trusted also depends on the Also trust email from my Contacts option. Do not assume every Outlook client and account gives contacts the same filtering treatment.

Microsoft 365 administration

Start with Microsoft Defender's submission or quarantine workflow for a false positive. If an allowance is necessary, scope it narrowly and review its duration.

Do not create a broad SCL=-1 mail-flow exception based only on a spoofable From address. Appropriate source authentication and organizational controls still matter. Malware and high-confidence phishing protections generally continue to apply despite ordinary allowlists.

FAQ

Why is a safe sender still being blocked?

Check conflicting blocked-sender entries and organization-level policy, then ask the administrator to inspect the message trace or quarantine result. A mailbox preference cannot override every service-level decision.

Can I allow a domain?

Yes. Enter example.com in the safe-domain list. This broadens the ordinary spam allowance to that domain's senders, subject to the protection limits above.

Can I manage this from the mobile app?

The mobile app does not offer the full set of junk-mail settings. Use the web or desktop interface for the safe list. Synchronization depends on the account type and where the list is stored; do not assume a classic desktop setting is server-side for every POP/IMAP account.

See Microsoft's guidance on safe sender lists. These steps have not been exercised against a live tenant.
