InfluxDB vs. Prometheus: choose by workload
Compare operational monitoring with timestamped time-series analysis, accounting for InfluxDB versions, query languages, and storage requirements.
Choose Prometheus when the main job is discovering services, collecting operational metrics, and evaluating alerts. Consider InfluxDB when the main job is accepting timestamped measurements or events and querying them as application or device data. The right InfluxDB edition and version matter: “InfluxDB” does not describe one query language or one retention model.
This is a documentation-based comparison from Guance's editorial team, not a performance benchmark.
Compare the operating models
| Dimension | Prometheus | InfluxDB |
|---|---|---|
| Typical ingestion | Scheduled scraping with service discovery | Client or Telegraf writes, commonly using line protocol |
| Data model | Metric identity plus labels; timestamped float or native-histogram samples | Measurements/tables, tags, fields, and timestamps; details depend on generation |
| Query language | PromQL for metric calculations and time windows | InfluxDB 1.x commonly uses InfluxQL; 2.x emphasizes Flux; 3 uses SQL and InfluxQL rather than Flux |
| Monitoring workflow | Scraping, recording/alert rules, and Alertmanager integration | Collection, storage, querying, and edition-specific processing or alert integrations |
| Historical data | Local retention plus optional external storage architecture; backfill has operational constraints | Timestamped writes and historical analysis, subject to the selected product's retention and query limits |
| Ecosystem fit | Kubernetes discovery, exporters, Grafana, and operational alerting | Telegraf, device telemetry, application time series, and Grafana |
Neither a push ingestion path nor SQL support proves higher throughput. Both systems need realistic sizing and schema design.
When Prometheus fits
Prometheus is a strong starting point for Kubernetes and microservice health: request rates, errors, latency distributions, resource usage, and SLO alerting. Its pull model helps connect “could the target be scraped?” with the measurements collected from it. Exporters and service discovery reduce bespoke collection work.
It is designed around metrics, not as a general document or log database. Unbounded event identifiers in labels create costly series. Keep detailed events in a suitable event/log store and correlate them with metrics.
When InfluxDB fits
Sensor readings, device telemetry, financial observations, and application measurements may arrive with meaningful source timestamps rather than a scraper's schedule. InfluxDB's write and query model can fit these workloads, especially when analysts need SQL or InfluxQL in a selected InfluxDB 3 product.
Validate late-arriving data, timestamp precision, duplicate-point behavior, retention, and the historical window you actually need. Do not assume that the free Core product and Enterprise or cloud editions have identical query and long-history capabilities. Structured event fields are also not equivalent to a purpose-built log search and retention workflow.
Common questions
Can they coexist? Yes. Prometheus can operate the monitoring/alerting path while InfluxDB serves a separate application-data path. Some InfluxDB versions provide Prometheus remote-write/read compatibility, but that is not a universal capability of every InfluxDB 3 edition. Verify the exact endpoint and supported protocol before choosing it as remote storage.
Can Prometheus accept pushed data? It supports additional ingestion paths, including an explicitly enabled remote-write receiver and OTLP receiver in supported versions. Pushgateway serves specific short-lived, service-level batch jobs; it is not a general replacement for scraping all processes, and pushed series require lifecycle cleanup.
Which is faster? A single-node throughput ranking needs a comparable test. Benchmark the same series cardinality, write pattern, query mix, retention, durability settings, and hardware. Choose Prometheus for the integrated operational monitoring workflow; choose the appropriate InfluxDB edition when timestamped data and its query model drive the requirement.
If you also need these metrics in Guance, validate a supported collection path and its label mapping against a known endpoint before broadening ingestion.
